ARMY OF THE POTOMAC
(Maj. Gen. G. B. McClellan, U.S.A.)
[#2] See note #1.
[#3] See note #1.
[#4] Consolidation of the old Second and Third Brigades, badly mauled at the battle of Fair Oaks / Seven Pines.
[#5] See note #1.
[#6] Fifth and Sixth Corps were provisionally organized by McClellan on 18 May (OR 14:181) but were officially recognized by Washington only on 22 July (OR 14:333).
[#7] Army artillery reserve, attached to Fifth Corps from 18 May 1862.
[#8] This battery is the only one whose number of pieces cannot be found in the OR. I put it at 2 since from OR 14:238 there were 108 guns in the Reservs but only 106 are accounted for in all the other batteries: 84 listed here, 6 (C&G, 3rd U.S.) with Stoneman, 12 (L&M, 3rd U.S. and I, 5th U.S.) with Sykes and 6 (H, 1st U.S.) with Hooker. The latter two are guesses of mine to nicely fit the respective totals of pieces.
[#9] Without guns of its own, serving in detachments with other batteries. Listed as unattached to any brigade in some sources.
[#10] The exact location of the Siege Train is somewhat confused. The companies listed here are the ones cited in OR 13:272 (the report in OR 13:969 somewhat differs); I assumed that all other companies were at White House, although this is by no means sure. Note that the ratio of men per gun seems unduly large.
[#11] See note #6.
[#12] Listed by Dyer, but not by other sources.
[#13] At Old Church, guarding the army's right flank. Infantry detached from Morell's Division, artillery from Hunt's Reserve, 5th U.S. cavalry from Casey's command and remaining cavalry from Cooke's Division. Casey's reports (OR 13:482) that Stoneman had 2,000 cavalrymen, but this number seems to include the 5th Pa. transferred to Dix's Department of Virginia, and however seems too large.
[#14] At White House, guarding the army's supply depot. For Siege Train see note #10. Field artillery detached from Richardson's division, 6th Pa. Reserves from McCall's division. Other units were at White House since May; it appears that the 5th U.S. Cavalry (listed here with Stoneman's Command) was previously part of Casey's Command. See below for details.
