NOTES
[#1] After Sifakis (Valley cavalry units enganged in the Seven Days).
Not present in the OOB in OR 13:483; however, in OR 13:552 there is a
brief reference to Munford.
[#2] The exact evolution of the artillery in Magruder's Command seems
particularly confused. The present list is after OR 14:688, with the
addition of McCarthy's and Hart's batteries (assuredly present), of
the remaining two sections of Lane's (as per OR 13:548) and of two
further guns of Woolfolk's (as per OR 13:542). The batteries not
unmistakably assigned to brigades I grouped under Lee, although it
seems that some of them were controlled by Major J. J. Garnett
(Jones' chief of artillery). However, other sources differ about the
composition and assignements of these units.
[#3] "Mounted on a rail car and protected from cannon-shot by a sloping
roof in front, covered with plates of iron, through winch a port-hole
had been pierced, and from rifle-shot on the sides by thick walls of
wood lined with iron" (OR 13:718).
[#4] Longstreet seems to have been more or less in charge of a
multi-division command (his own, A. P. Hill's, and apparently
also D. H. Hill's during the initial battles) but his position
was never formalized. Interestingly, both Magruder and Longstreet
signed themselves as "Commander of Right Wing of the Army" during
mid-June (see for example OR 14:605 vs. 14:607, and 14:614 vs.
14:621). D. H. Hill's division was transferred to Jackson's
Command very soon.
[#5] In charge of all territory south of James River, including
Drewry's Bluff, with headquarters in Petersburg (OR 14:611).
Ransom's and Walker's brigades crossed soon, being detached to
Huger, with part of Daniel following later. First (Martin's)
Brigade not listed here, defending the southern part of the
Department against Dix's forces in Suffolk.
[#6] Initially garrisoning Chaffin's Bluff. Fought alongside
Holmes' command and is thereafter shown here as part of it
for sake of simplicity, although apparently there was no formal
subordination.
[#7] Baker was directed "to assume command of all the cavalry that
was not with General Stuart" (OR 13:525). Accordingly, I listed
here all cavalry units engaged and not listed in Stuart's report.
Note that Sifakis states that 10th Va. Cavalry was formed from
the 8th Va. Cav. Battalion only on September 24, so I listed here
but the seven battalion's companies.
[#8] The exact composition is somewhat open to doubt, since there
were many exchanges of units between Pendleton's reserve and the
various divisions.
[#9] Actual chain of command unclear. Rhett and Shields are mentioned
in OR 14:609 with reference to heavy artillery, and Rhett is listed
as chief of artillery (on the same level of Pendleton) in OR 14:645.
[#10] Camp of training and instruction for new units. Accordingly, I put
their strength at only half the normal force.
ARTILLERY PIECES
32 R = 32-pdr Rifled Gun, 6.40", Rifled (i.e. an old 32-pdr naval or
seacoast smoothbore gun, rebored and rifled. Actually, should have
been referred to as a 64-pdr.
32 H = 32-pdr Field Howitzer, 6.40", smoothbore (actually, according
to reports in OR 14:686 and 14:688 these weapons were "32-pdr guns",
i.e. seacoast heavy artillery, but it seems frankly impossible to
have dragged such a leviathan around the battlefield)
30 P = 30-pdr Parrott, 4.20", rifled (incorrectly referred to as
32-pdr in OR 13:689)
24 H = 24-pdr Field Howitzer, 5.82", smoothbore
18 R = 18-pdr Rifle Gun (after OR 13:689. Exact material unclear
since no such weapon seems to have existed; probably an incorrect
reference to a 20-pdr Parrott [3.67"] since same report shows
a 30-pdr Parrott as a 32-pdr)
12 B = 12-pdr Blakely Gun, 3.50", rifled
12 S = 12-pdr smoothbore Gun, 4.62", smoothbore (could be either the
old, heavy, Model 1841 Field Gun or the newer, handier Model 1857
Light Field Gun [Napoleon])
12 H = 12-pdr Field Howitzer, 4.62", smoothbore
10 P = 10-pdr Parrott, 2.91", rifled
6 S = 6-pdr Field Gun, 3.67", smoothbore
4.62" R = 4.62-inch Rifle Gun (after OR 13:539. Could have been
either made out of 24-pdr Siege Gun body [5,150 pounds] or 8-inch
Siege Howitzers body [3,390 pounds]; probably the latter, since
according to OR actual weight was "nearly 4,000 pounds")
3" R = 3-inch Rifle Gun, 3.00", rifled (out of 6-pdr Field Gun body)
Many thanks to Dave Powell for his help in researching the artillery.
